About this job:

 Performs the day to day operations of a greenhouse to grow and/or harvest high-quality produce to be served to students across the District. Works with management and staff to increase produce quality/yields and collects data to improve facility operations. Follows farm food safety practices at all times and ensures the cleanliness, organization and safety of the facility.

 What You'll Do:

  • Prepares work area daily, including sanitization of work space, equipment and supplies needed for growing or harvesting processes; ensures plants are watered as needed on a daily basis.

  • Plants seeds into propagation trays and properly transfers seedlings into established mediums; monitors water/nutrient parameters, trellising and other plant work through all stages of growth.

  • Ensures rows are prepared for harvesting; harvests, packages and stores produce.

  • Installs, cleans and maintains irrigation systems throughout the facility, as directed.

  • Follows standard operating procedures and accurately records related data to properly log and track all work performed as well as monitor trends.

  • As directed, maintains the integrated pest management plan (IPM), including monitoring plants and roots/soil for pests and fungus/bacterial concerns, and acting upon these issues accordingly with management; may assist through pesticide sprays if required.

  • May utilize a lift or other equipment to reach and care for plants; ensures proper use and safety of all necessary greenhouse equipment.

  • Provides quality assurance for all produce grown and harvested within the facility; helps track and identify potential safety issues.

  • Performs maintenance of property as needed, which may include weeding, lawn care, trash/waste removal, snow removal and related tasks needed to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the facility.

  • This role supports district food systems operations and involves hands-on work in a variety of environments throughout the year. Depending on the season, responsibilities will rotate between working on the school-based farm, in the greenhouse, and in the warehouse.

What You’ll Need:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.

  • Prior experience in gardening is preferred, particularly experience with commercial horticulture. 

  • Pesticide Handler's Certification preferred but not required; must be willing to participate in related District provided training.
